Life Isn’t Fair; And That’s Okay

Parenting is hard

Being a parent is hard. Tremendously hard.

And with all due respect to every parent out there, being a single parent? Even harder. Simple math proves that one.

If you’ve ever had a moment where you wanted to scream, cry, or just sit in the car a little longer before walking inside, you’re not alone. You’re human.

And if you’ve ever heard your child say, “That’s not fair!” — congratulations, you’ve just been handed one of life’s greatest teaching moments.

Because here’s the truth: life isn’t fair.

Louis C.K. once said,

“The only time you should look into your neighbor’s bowl is to make sure they have enough, not to check to see if they have more than you.”

Powerful words. And ironically, he shared that while completely failing to teach it to his own daughter, hilariously, in the clip below:

We’ve all been there, giving in when we swore we wouldn’t, caving to the moment because we’re just so tired. But even in those moments, the lesson still stands: life isn’t fair, and that’s what makes kindness matter.

So this week, slow down a little. Notice how you react to small frustrations. Offer grace to your kids, to others, and to yourself. Do one unexpected act of kindness, even if no one sees it.

Because the best lessons aren’t the ones you say, they’re the ones your children see.

Through your actions, they’ll learn that compassion, love, and understanding are what make a home and the world a better place.

And it doesn’t matter if your child is four or forty-four. The lesson’s the same: look out for others, and you’ll never go wrong.

Teach it. Live it. Repeat daily.

Rock on.
